Abstract:
What are the key elements that should be included?
oBackground: A simple opening sentence or two placing the work in context.
oPurpose: One or two sentences giving the purpose of the work.
oMethod(s): One or two sentences explaining what was (or will) be done.
oResults: One or two sentences indicating the main findings (or what you hope to accomplish with the study).
oConclusions: One sentence giving the most important consequence of the work – what do the results mean? How will they be used?
Helpful tips when writing an abstract
oReread your thesis with the goal of abstracting in mind.
oLook specifically for these main parts of your thesis: purpose, methods, scope, results, conclusions and recommendations.
oUse the headings and table of contents as a guide to writing your abstract.
oAfter you've finished rereading your thesis, write a rough draft without looking back at what you're abstracting.
o Revise your rough draft.
Introduction:
oBackground
Establishing the context, background and/or importance of the topic
oProblem
Indicating a problem, controversy or a gap in the field of study
oRationale of this study
Establishing the significance and desirability of the study
oResearch Foundation
Describing the model or theory underlying this study
oResearch Questions
Listing the research questions or hypotheses
oResearch Method(s)
Providing a synopsis of the research method(s)
Literature Review:
oThe literature review should be a well-organized overview of the research most closely related to your work.
oYou are trying to demonstrate two things:
+You are familiar with the research that has been done in this area and can explain to fellow sociologists who might not be familiar with this specific literature, what is out there
+You have found a gap in the literature …something that has not been well researched or not been researched utilizing a certain theoretical perspective or methodological design
oConstruct citations and references along the way
oA minimum of 35 references should be included
