THE OVERVIEW ABOUT 5S
Sort
Sorting is the first step of the process in which remove all the items from the work center which are not needed for the immediate continuous operation (Hough, 2008). At this stage, a red tag is usually used to attach to unnecessary items which will be moved to a temporary holding area to discard (Howell, 2009). This is an opportunity for the production team to re-evaluate the uses of tools, equipment, raw materials to adjust the future buying decision as well as reuse and recycle in other situations.
Set in order
The second step in a 5S process is arranging the stored items to best support the manufacturing activities and workers should be motivated to clear out and improve the workplace’s visual management (Van Patten, 2006). Comparing between before and after photos is the key importance of this stage (Samuels, 2009). Moreover, this step is also utilized to find out and correct the missteps in the manufacturing process
Shine
This is also called the sweep stage where teams thoroughly remove clutter and fix equipment or building components (Hough, 2008). The goal of this stage is to identify and eliminate the causes of wastes, damages as well as clean up the workstation (Van Pattern, 2006). This step needs the full involvement of all employees to collect the data of what is needed to clean and how often this activity happens (Samuel, 2009).
Standardize
In this stage, the standardized procedures, rules, and expectations for maintaining continuous activities are developed through sort, set in order, and shine daily (Moore et al., 2005). The benefit of standardization is low maintenance and overhead cost as well as high loyalty and efficiency (Sorooshian et al., 2012).
Sustain
This step requires a broad change in the behavior of employees at all levels within an organization (Kobayashi et al., 2008). This process of repetition encourages the employees to create good habits and make the continuity of daily routine (Ho, 2010). To achieve this goal, employees should maintain self-discipline in their daily activities for the 5S concept as well as an organization should consider this one of the organizational cultures.
