IMPACTS OF GOOGLE ON STUDENTS' SKILLS
The positive impacts of Google.
A key positive impact of Google is to help students build teamwork skills even they don’t have to meet face to face. Google Chat send text messages instantly, users are capable to edit and give feedback to teammates through Google docs and presentation. Besides, with the online survey Google form, learners could collect the responses for some statistic software like SPSS. Learners also use Google sites to build a free website. All these data could be stored on Google Drive and assessed everywhere. Besides, these tools help students feel more confident and improve their communication skills and flexibility ability.
The negative impacts of Google.
The research result has proven that Google could change education negatively through some aspects. Such as for the control group when Google tools were not permitted in the classroom, students complained and even had negative responses. It sounds like they couldn’t survive without these applications. They depend too much on technology in making decisions and this will limit their creativity and adaptability.
Secondly, etiquette sets the rules in behaviors and creates a professional environment to build strong relationships among people. However, sometimes technologies such as Gmail Chat or Facebook messenger ruin the respectful atmosphere, distract learners from classroom activities, and make the negative effects on students’ achievements. That is the reason why the control group has a higher mean score than experiment one.
Thirdly, in research results, there is no distinction between two groups on pretest and posttest or we could see Google has no impact on the integrity of students. However, this result could be seen from different perspectives when students hesitate to tell the truth. Because for the long term of teaching and grading, I see the Internet, especially Google Chrome creates a rise in cut and paste plagiarism. This phenomenon also related to work ethics.
Some suggestions
To help students improve their skills, teachers should adopt some suitable policies. Business Administration students are flexible and good at teamwork but they often don’t follow the rules in the classroom while Accounting and Finance students are good at numbers and standards but sometimes they are inactive in class. Thus, teachers should mix students from different majors and GPA in the team to build the necessary skills. On the other hand, teachers should combine the traditional construction aid with new technology to improve the learning (Shettigar et al., 2014)
Besides, teachers should organize some training programs and seminars about the benefits as well as drawbacks of Google tools to orient students to use them appropriately, especially for freshmen who don’t have many chances to use them at the high schools.
Finally, schools, as well as teachers, should speak with students about cell phone safety and etiquette before the project, emphasizing issues such as the public nature of text messaging and how students need to be mindful of every message they send as well as developed rules: Phones are to be used for intended purposes only.
